1. Rest Before the Race
It’s tempting to sight-see in NYC in the days before the marathon, especially if this will be your first time in the Big Apple. But it’ll be super important to rest a lot before the race and stay off your feet as much as you can.
When you go to the expo to collect your race info, remember to have a time limit. When you’re running the marathon, you’ll be touring all five boroughs, so no need to be a tourist the day before.
2. Conserve Energy for the Hills
The New York City Marathon is known for its hills and the best way to tackle them is by conserving energy. If you try to maintain your pace on the hills, you could end up completely drained of energy by the middle of the race.
3. Let Others Pass You on the Hills
It takes a lot of energy to run up a steep hill and then will make it difficult for you to take advantage of going back down. Running up the hill at a consistent effort and then shortening your stride is a great strategy. Use your arm and let other runners pass you— you could end up passing them later in the race!
4. Wear the Right Gear
Gear for marathons can be a big part of the battle. Make sure you pack layers of things you could potentially throw away. You could try old gear that you’re fine with also taking off if you get too warm.
5. Stay Warm Before the Race
It won’t help your body to be shivering in the early morning before the race, so make sure you wear layers. If you sit on a blanket at the start of the race, you may need to ditch it before you take off.
6. Make the Most of the Starting Location
The NYC marathon will start on Staten Island and this can be one of the most difficult moments of your race. Try to make the most of this time by bringing a blanket, relaxing and resting your body.
7. Eat Small Meals
If you have a later start time, you may need to opt for a pre-race meal. Try to have a light snack when you wake up and then a few hours before the race, you can have your typical pre-race meal at the starting spot.
