How to Stay Safe Running in the Cold

Running is one of the best forms of exercise you can get and there are a lot of great benefits to it. When you’re an avid runner, your day doesn’t feel right unless you get a run in.

But when the winter months are approaching, the cold weather can make going for a run challenging. You don’t want to harm yourself by running without taking precautions.

That doesn’t mean you need to stop running though. Here are a few ways you can stay safe while running in the cold weather.

1. Prevent Slipping Hazards

Running in the winter means that there are a lot of slipping hazards. With the rain, ice and snow, the roads are more slippery so you need to watch out.

Get shoes with soles that prevent slipping. Find ones with decent grips which are made for running in slippery conditions.

You could also change your current running shoes with chain grips for the soles. They’ll ensure you have a comfortable run without the worry of falling over.

2. Wrap Up Warm, But Don’t Overdress

When the cold weather strikes, you need to wear the right gear to stay warm. Layer up and avoid any cotton items as they will get wet and increase the risk of hypothermia.

Don’t overdress for your run though. When you’re too warm and snug, you’ll start to sweat and overheat in your workout. You can peel layers off if you get too warm so make sure to do this.

Dress as though it’s a lot warmer outside than it actually is. Also, do some warm-up exercises before you run. This helps to raise your temperature so you won’t be too cold when you start.

3. Stay Hydrated

In the winter we often feel dry and dehydrated. Dehydration can make you very ill so make sure to be as hydrated as possible.

When you run, you’ll sweat and this will cause you to lose a lot of water. Bring plenty of water with you on your run and make sure to drink often.

Invest in a hand-held water bottle or belt water bottle for your runs. They’re easy to carry and you won’t have to worry about getting dehydrated.

4. Protect Your Hands, Head and Feet

You lose most of your core body heat through extremities like your head, hands and feet. Make sure to protect them properly and keep them warm.

This means wearing gloves, a hat and good socks. Disposable heat packets are also great for staying warm and you can tuck them into mittens.

You don’t want to risk frostbite in these areas, so make it a priority to wear them on all your runs.

5. Get a Running Partner

Running with other people makes it a lot more fun and social. In the winter months, it can also make your runs a lot safer.

If you don’t already have a running partner, there are plenty of ways to find one. If an accident does happen, they will be there to help right away.

They’ll also keep you company on runs and help you stay motivated in the long run.
